SISO SPICE FARM
About This Museum
You might not know it, but the very road leading to this old farm was once marched upon by Sultan Said himself, on his way to inspect the clove trees that made him fabulously wealthy. The main building is a classic Zanzibari plantation house, its whitewashed walls and heavy, carved door standing as a quiet monument to the island's spice trade heyday. Inside, it’s not about glass cases; it’s about burlap sacks brimming with emerald-green cardamom pods and the deep rust-colored swirls of cinnamon bark, all waiting to be touched and smelled. You can almost hear the ghostly haggling of merchants who shaped empires from these very aromas.
Collection Highlights
The real stars are the living collections—the gnarled clove trees, spiky vanilla orchids, and vibrant turmeric roots growing right outside. You'll see fresh nutmeg with its astonishing red mace lace and learn to identify the potent 'Zanzibar red' pepper by its fiery scent alone.
Visitor Information
Just show up in Kidichi and someone will gladly take you on a walk through the groves. The best part is at the end when they might just whip you up a fresh coconut and sprinkle it with their own cinnamon.
Architecture & Building
A traditional, low-slung Swahili structure with a coraline ragstone base, thick walls to keep things cool, and a wide veranda shaded by a makuti thatch roof.
