Science North
About This Museum
You know that iconic image of Sudbury with the giant nickel? Well, Science North is right next to it, and the building itself is a total head-turner—it looks like two massive snowflakes clinging to the Canadian Shield rock. Stepping inside feels less like a stuffy museum and more like a playground for your brain, where you're encouraged to touch everything. We spent ages in the caverns beneath the main building, which are literally blasted right into the bedrock, feeling like real explorers. The energy is infectious, with kids (and let's be honest, adults too) laughing as they get hands-on with tornado simulators and meet live animals.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the butterfly gallery, a warm tropical oasis where they'll land right on your shoulder. The F. Jean MacLeod Butterfly Gallery is magical. Then there's the immersive planetarium for a tour of the cosmos and the massive IMAX screen that makes you feel like you're diving into the ocean or flying through space.
Visitor Information
It's brilliantly set up for all ages, so whether you're six or sixty, you'll find something fascinating to do. Definitely check the schedule for live science demonstrations—they often have explosive chemistry shows or cool animal encounters that are a total blast.
Architecture & Building
The main structures are two giant white 'snowflake' buildings connected by a rock tunnel and nestled right into the natural landscape of Ramsey Lake.
