Schloss Eggenberg
About This Museum
People come to Schloss Eggenberg not just for a tour, but to step into a living storybook of Styrian power and intellect. You wander through rooms where every painted ceiling tells a tale, from the zodiac circling the Planetary Room to mythological scenes that make you crane your neck in wonder. Then you escape into the vast gardens, a perfect green world for a quiet stroll away from the city's buzz. In the end, it’s the sheer harmony of it all—the art, the architecture, the nature—that stays with you, a complete and elegant vision from another time.
Collection Highlights
The highlight is undoubtedly the 24 state rooms, especially the Planetary Room with its breathtaking ceiling of over 600 painted panels depicting the known universe. Don't miss the numismatic collection, one of the world's most important, housed in an adjacent modern building that somehow fits right in.
Visitor Information
You'll need to join a guided tour to see the palace interiors, so it's best to check their website for times beforehand. The gardens, however, are free to roam and are a lovely spot for a picnic on a sunny Graz afternoon.
Architecture & Building
It's a magnificent Baroque palace built around an older Gothic core, designed as an allegory of the cosmos with 365 windows, 31 rooms per floor, and 24 state rooms—all reflecting the calendar, time, and the known world.
