Kunsthaus Graz
About This Museum
Kunsthaus Graz is impossible to miss. Nicknamed the 'Friendly Alien,' this amorphous blue blob of a building, studded with nozzle-like skylights, squats right on the Mur River. It’s a temple to the art of our time, focusing entirely on contemporary and cutting-edge work from the 1960s onwards. Stepping inside feels like entering a living, breathing organism dedicated to what's new and next.
Collection Highlights
There are no permanent collections in the traditional sense; instead, you'll find a constantly changing roster of provocative exhibitions. The museum specializes in media art, installations, and photography, often showcasing international artists you won't see anywhere else in Austria. Don't miss the 'Needle,' a giant glass nozzle that doubles as a viewing platform over the old city rooftops.
Visitor Information
Grab a coffee at their rooftop café for some of the best views in Graz—it's a perfect spot to digest what you've just seen. The museum is surprisingly central, just a short stroll from the historic Hauptplatz, making it easy to weave into a day of exploring.
