Schaulager
About This Museum
Just on the outskirts of Basel, tucked away in the Münchenstein neighbourhood, you'll find a building that's far more than it first appears. This is the Schaulager, a purpose-built art warehouse that completely rethinks what an art museum can be. Instead of a permanent display, they take in vast holdings of contemporary art from major foundations and mount incredibly deep, scholarly exhibitions. It’s a place where art is kept very much alive, studied, and brought out for us to see in startlingly fresh ways.
Collection Highlights
You never quite know what you'll get, as their focus shifts with each exhibition cycle—past shows have been dedicated to monumental figures like Dieter Roth or sprawling installations by Robert Gober. The real thrill is seeing a single artist's work explored in incredible depth, with pieces pulled directly from the storage vaults.
Visitor Information
It's best to check their website for the current exhibition as they aren't always open to the general public; some periods are for researchers only. When they are open, it's well worth the short tram ride from central Basel for a truly unique art experience.
Architecture & Building
Designed by the famed Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron, it’s a striking structure of raw concrete and greenish serpentine stone that looks every bit the serious and sophisticated warehouse it is.
