Kunstmuseum Basel
About This Museum
People often wander into our Kunstmuseum with a specific purpose—to stand before the Holbeins. And what a moment that is, seeing the dead Christ or that portrait of Bonifacius Amerbach, works that have anchored this city's soul for centuries. But then they get pleasantly lost wandering into rooms full of vibrant 19th-century color or a challenging 21st-century installation. You leave feeling you haven't just seen art, but traced the entire emotional history of a region.
Collection Highlights
The heart of it all is the Holbein family's breathtakingly real portraits from the Renaissance. Beyond that, you'll find everything from delicate late-Gothic altarpieces carved from local limewood to the bold, expressive strokes of artists like Arnold Böcklin.
Visitor Information
You'll find us at St. Alban-Graben 16, right in the heart of the city. It's easy to spend a whole afternoon here, so give yourself time to wander.
Architecture & Building
The main building is a grand, dignified neoclassical structure from the 1930s, all clean lines and light stone, with a strikingly modern contemporary wing added recently that's connected by an underground passage.
