Petrified Forest Restcamp & San Living Museum
About This Museum
Out here on the long, dusty C39 road between Khorixas and Twyfelfontein, you'll find a place that feels like two worlds colliding. The Petrified Forest Restcamp is your base for exploring an ancient wonder—a vast open-air site scattered with enormous fossilized tree trunks that are millions of years old. Just down the road, the San Living Museum brings a more recent history to life, where local guides from the San community demonstrate traditional hunting techniques, crafts, and storytelling. It’s a powerful combination of deep geological time and vibrant living culture, all under the vast Namibian sky.
Collection Highlights
The main event is walking among the petrified logs themselves, some over 30 meters long and completely turned to stone. At the living museum, you can watch someone make a fire using only sticks or see how poison is applied to arrows for hunting.
Visitor Information
It's a restcamp too, so you can actually stay in simple cabins or camp right here. Definitely bring a hat and water for the petrified forest walk—there's not a speck of shade!
Architecture & Building
The buildings are low-slung and rustic, made from natural materials like stone and thatch to blend right into the rugged desert landscape.
