Damara Living Museum
About This Museum
You won't find dusty glass cases here. The Damara Living Museum is an open-air village, painstakingly reconstructed from natural materials by the Damara people themselves to preserve a culture that predates most in Namibia. Itβs a vibrant, living classroom where history is demonstrated, not just displayed. Visitors become part of the scene, smelling the herbs used in traditional medicine and hearing stories passed down through generations.
Collection Highlights
The 'collections' are living skills: watch a blacksmith forge arrowheads from scrap metal, see women craft intricate leather bags and jewelry using ancient techniques, and learn how to make fire with just two sticks. Don't miss the chance to try your hand at playing one of their unique musical instruments.
Visitor Information
It's located just outside Twyfelfontein, making it a perfect cultural stop on a northern Namibia road trip. The guides are community members whose personal stories bring every demonstration to life.
Architecture & Building
The complex is a cluster of low, domed huts built from mopane branches and a mix of mud and dung, seamlessly blending into the stark, beautiful Khomas Hochland landscape.
