Parliament Building and Museum
About This Museum
You'd never guess that the very spot where Barbados's laws are debated today also holds the key to its fascinating past. I just wandered from a modern, air-conditioned committee room right into a historical gallery filled with artifacts that tell the story of our nationhood. The building itself is a stunning mix of old and new, where the original 19th-century structure seamlessly connects to a contemporary wing. Itβs a living, breathing institution, not just a static display case.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the actual Ceremonial Mace, a powerful symbol of authority, or the original newspapers announcing our Independence in 1966. Seeing the handwritten notes from our first parliamentary sessions makes history feel incredibly immediate.
Visitor Information
Entry is free, but you'll need to book a tour in advance as it's a working government buildingβsecurity is tight. The staff are wonderfully knowledgeable and love sharing stories you won't find in any guidebook.
Architecture & Building
Imagine classic Barbadian coral limestone architecture with grand arches and high ceilings, then picture it elegantly fused with a sleek, modern addition of glass and steel.
