George Washington House
About This Museum
It's a little-known fact that the only country George Washington ever visited outside of the American colonies was right here in Barbados. He stayed in this very house for two months in 1751, and walking through its rooms feels like stepping directly into the 18th century. The experience goes far beyond the man himself, delving deep into the complex social and economic history of the island. You can almost hear the whispers of the past in the gentle creak of the floorboards.
Collection Highlights
Look for his actual diary entries and see the hypocaust, an ingenious early air-cooling system built into the foundation. The exhibits don't shy away from the plantation era, telling the vital stories of the enslaved Africans whose forced labor powered the island's sugar economy.
