Panorama Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away in the Thuringian countryside, the Panorama Museum is home to one of the most audacious works of art you'll ever lay eyes on. Its entire reason for being is a single, monumental painting that completely surrounds you. This isn't a quiet gallery of small canvases; it's an immersive experience on a truly epic scale. The building itself, a stark, modern cylinder from the outside, gives little hint of the dramatic scene contained within.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is Werner Tübke's 'Early Bourgeois Revolution in Germany,' a colossal 1,722-square-meter cyclorama depicting the German Peasants' War. Wrapping 360 degrees around a central viewing platform, it features over 3,000 individual figures in a masterful blend of Renaissance artistry and modern commentary. It’s less a painting and more a world you step into.
Visitor Information
You'll find it at Am Schlachtberg 9 in Bad Frankenhausen—the unique cylindrical structure is hard to miss. Give yourself a couple of hours to truly take in the sheer detail of the panorama; it’s worth every minute.
Architecture & Building
From the outside, it's a striking, almost brutalist-style cylindrical building made of concrete and glass, purpose-built in the GDR era to house its single, immense artwork.
