Ohange Himba Village
About This Museum
It's not every day you visit a museum that's actually a living, breathing village. At Ohange, you don't just look at exhibits; you're invited into the daily rhythms of the Himba people. You might see women mixing fragrant otjize paste from butterfat and ochre, or learn how the iconic hairstyles signify age and status. The experience is an intimate, respectful window into a culture that has thrived in this harshly beautiful landscape for generations.
Collection Highlights
The 'collections' are the people themselvesβtheir traditional jewelry made from iron and shell, the small, handheld ancestral altars (okuruwo), and the skill of building a home from a framework of mopane branches plastered with mud and dung.
Visitor Information
It's located near Palmwag in the Kunene Region; since it's an active homestead, it's essential to visit with a local guide who can facilitate a respectful and meaningful exchange.
Architecture & Building
The 'building' is the village itself: a scattered cluster of small, circular homesteads crafted entirely from natural materials, seamlessly integrated into the vast, rocky desert landscape.
