Nong Khai Aquarium

About This Museum

Honestly, the coolest part about this place isn't just looking at the fish—it's walking *under* them. You enter this clear tunnel right through the main tank, and suddenly you're surrounded by giant catfish and other freshwater giants gliding right over your head. It feels like you've been dropped into the bottom of the Mekong River for a few minutes. The whole experience is surprisingly intimate and a bit magical, especially for a smaller aquarium.

Collection Highlights

The stars of the show are definitely the massive native fish from the Mekong, like the hulking Mekong giant catfish and the striking striped barb. You'll also find tanks dedicated to all sorts of other local freshwater species, many of which are vital to the community's way of life, which gives it a really local feel.

Visitor Information

It's super easy to find right along the riverfront in Nong Khai—a perfect stop to escape the afternoon heat. Don't expect a massive, overwhelming place; you can see everything at a relaxed pace in under an hour, which is actually part of its charm.

Architecture & Building

From the outside, it's a fairly modern and unassuming building, but inside it's all about that incredible tunnel view that makes you forget everything else.
