If these ancient red-brick walls could talk, they'd tell tales of sieges and princes, for the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin has been the city's steadfast guardian since the early 1500s. Perched high above the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers, it's more than a fortress; it's the very heart of our city's long history. Today, you're as likely to hear a classical concert echoing in its courtyards as you are to find locals strolling its ramparts. It’s a place where past and present walk comfortably hand-in-hand.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the deep dive into regional history in the Dmitrievskaya Tower, where artifacts tell the story from medieval times right up to the Second World War. Up in the Ivanovskaya Tower, you can get a sense of the old prison cells that once held rebels and thinkers alike. And for something completely different, the main building often hosts wonderful temporary exhibitions on everything from traditional folk art to modern photography.

You can wander the grounds freely most days, which is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Just check the times for the museum towers if you want to go inside, as they can vary by season. Wear comfortable shoes—those cobblestones are authentic, but they can be tough on the feet after a while!

It's a magnificent example of a medieval Russian fortress-kremlin, built from striking red brick with thirteen formidable towers—twelve surviving today—stretching along its powerful walls that follow the contours of the hill.
