Nepali Folk Musical Instrument Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away near the quiet Laxmishwor Mahadeb temple, this unassuming museum is a true labour of love for Nepal's sonic heritage. It feels less like a formal institution and more like walking into a carefully curated attic, where every instrument has a story whispered from the hills and valleys. You'll find the long, trumpet-like Karnal used in village festivals and the delicate, four-stringed Sarangi, whose melancholic sound often accompanies epic tales. The air is thick with the faint, sweet scent of aged wood and resin, a quiet testament to the music that once lived here.
Collection Highlights
Look for the intricate Madal drums, each with its own unique tuning paste applied to the drumheads, and the imposing Narsingha, a curved copper horn played by the Damai community during important processions.
Visitor Information
It's a small, personal space, so you won't need more than an hour. Just ring the bell if the door is closed—the caretaker is usually nearby and happy to share stories.
