Múzeum kysuckej dediny vo Vychylovke
About This Museum
What truly sets our Kysuce Village Museum apart isn't just the old buildings, but the very ground it sits on. Nestled in the steep, forested hills of Vychylovka, this isn't a flat, orderly skanzen; it feels like a real village that just happened to grow here centuries ago. The star of the show is the historic forest railway, a narrow-gauge logging train that still chugs through the landscape, connecting you directly to the area's industrial past. Wandering these paths, you get a genuine sense of how people carved out a life in this challenging, beautiful terrain.
Collection Highlights
You can step inside the dark, smoky interior of a shepherd's log cabin from Riečnica, complete with its unique 'kurná' clay oven. Then there's the majestic timbered church from Nová Bystrica and the fully-equipped village schoolhouse. But for many, the most memorable part is riding the historic switchback railway itself—a working relic that was once vital for hauling timber.
Visitor Information
Come prepared for a bit of a walk; wear good shoes as it's quite hilly. The train ride is an absolute must-do, but check the schedule when you arrive as it doesn't run all day. It's the kind of place where you can easily spend an entire afternoon just soaking in the quiet and imagining life in another time.
Architecture & Building
You'll find classic Kysuce log architecture everywhere—robust wooden houses with stone foundations and steep shingled roofs designed to shed heavy snow. Many buildings feature the distinctive 'zrub' construction, where hand-hewn logs are perfectly notched at the corners without a single nail.
