About This Museum

Out here in the vast, wild steppe of Khakassia, it feels like you've stumbled onto the set of an ancient sci-fi film. The 'Sunduki' range isn't a building at all, but a series of dramatic natural rock fortresses that ancient people used as a giant astronomical observatory. We spent hours scrambling up the paths, finding ourselves face-to-face with millennia-old petroglyphs of dragons and warriors carved right into the stone. The most incredible part is standing on the first 'Sunduk' and seeing the perfect alignment of rocks and notches that mark the solstices—it’s humbling to see how they read the sky.

Collection Highlights

The main exhibits are the landscape itself: the First Sunduk with its 'Khakassian Sphinx' rock formation and celestial viewing platform, the mysterious White Horse drawing on a cliff face, and countless panels of ancient rock art depicting shamans and mythical beasts.

Visitor Information

Wear sturdy shoes—this is a proper hiking adventure, not a paved walkway! It's remote, so bring all your own water and snacks. The drive from Abakan takes about two hours, but trust me, the mind-blowing views over the endless steppe are absolutely worth it.

Architecture & Building

Forget buildings; this is raw, powerful nature. Imagine colossal sandstone ridges jutting straight out of the flat grassland, sculpted by wind and time into shapes that look like giant chests (which is what 'Sunduki' means).
