Museum Urk, het Oude Raadhuis
About This Museum
Tucked away in the old heart of Urk, a village with a soul as salty as the sea, you'll find Museum Urk in 'het Oude Raadhuis'. Stepping inside is like walking into your great-grandmother's front room, if she had a collection of traditional costumes and ship models. It’s a place that tells the story of an island that was once surrounded by water, before the Zuiderzee was reclaimed to create Flevoland. The creaky floorboards and the smell of old wood seem to whisper tales of fishermen, faith, and a fiercely independent community.
Collection Highlights
You can't miss the intricate Urker folk costumes with their stunning silver buttons, or the poignant display of shipwreck mementos that brings home the peril of life at sea. Upstairs, a beautifully detailed model shows what old Urk looked like when it was still an island.
Visitor Information
It's a small museum, so you won't need more than an hour. Do check their opening times online before you go, as they can be seasonal. Afterwards, be sure to wander through the surrounding 'wijken'—the maze-like alleyways of the old village are an attraction in themselves.
Architecture & Building
Housed in the former town hall, it's a classic example of Urk's traditional architecture: a sturdy, gabled building made of dark brick that has weathered more than a few North Sea storms.
