Museum Schokland
About This Museum
Out here on this old island, you're walking on what was once a desperate battleground between man and sea. For centuries, Schokland was a storm-battered strip of land in the Zuiderzee, home to a stubborn community of fishermen who were eventually evacuated in 1859 when the water became too much to bear. The museum itself, tucked into the former church on the Middelbuurt terp, tells the tale of that lost island life and the incredible reclamation that followed, when the surrounding waters were pumped dry to create our Noordoostpolder. Itβs a place that makes you feel the weight of history under your feet.
Collection Highlights
You can't miss the massive whale skeleton that greets youβa reminder this was once open sea. Inside, you'll find poignant personal items left behind by evacuees and a stunning collection of prehistoric artifacts, including a 4,000-year-old human skeleton we call 'Schokland Man,' all dug up from the fertile soil that now surrounds us.
Visitor Information
It's best to check their website for current opening times as they can change with the seasons. Wear good walking shoes because half the fun is exploring the ancient footpaths and seeing the old harbour skeletons out in the open air.
Architecture & Building
The heart of the museum is housed in a simple, atmospheric Dutch Reformed church from 1834, painted a stark white, standing proud on one of the original man-made mounds (terps) that kept it safe from high tides.
