Museum of the Galician People
About This Museum
What truly sets our museum apart isn't just what's inside, but the very stones that hold it. We're housed in the old Convent of San Domingos de Bonaval, a place where monks have walked since the 13th century. It means you're breathing in history before you even see an exhibit. We tell the story of the Galician people, from our deep Celtic roots and maritime traditions to the rural life that shaped our identity.
Collection Highlights
You'll find everything from hórreos (those iconic granite grain stores) and traditional fishing boats to hauntingly beautiful pieces of Gothic sacred art. Don't miss the collection of 'sambenitos'—rare fragments of cloth from the Inquisition—or the 'muiñeiras' playing softly in the folk music section.
Visitor Information
Take your time wandering through the cloisters and don't forget to climb up to the triple spiral staircase; it's a marvel of baroque engineering that leads you to a breathtaking view over Santiago's old rooftops. It’s a quiet spot, perfect for reflection.
Architecture & Building
It's a magnificent mix, really—the stern, solid Gothic bones of the old convent church blended with the elegant baroque additions, all built from the characteristic granite of our region.
