Museum of Archeology of Moscow
About This Museum
People don't just come here for ancient artifacts; they come to literally walk beneath the city and stand on the original 16th-century cobblestones of old Moscow. Tucked seven meters underground on Manege Square, this museum feels like a secret portal to the city's layered past. You'll find everything from medieval chess pieces carved from bone to the massive stone foundations of the long-lost Voskresensky Bridge. It’s a powerful, almost tactile connection to the millions of Muscovites who have walked these streets before us.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is undoubtedly the in-situ foundation of the Voskresensky Bridge over the Neglinnaya River, a colossal structure hidden for centuries. Other treasures include delicate 12th-century gold rings with intricate filigree, a hoard of silver coins from the reign of Ivan the Terrible, and a wonderfully preserved leather boot from a 14th-century craftsman.
Visitor Information
It's right at the heart of things on Manege Square, so it's easy to pop in after seeing the Kremlin or Alexander Garden. Just look for the grand, neoclassical pavilion and head down the stairs into history.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a striking Soviet-era neoclassical pavilion built in the 1990s, its most defining feature is its subterranean location, built directly into the excavation site it protects.
