Museo San Francisco
About This Museum
Everyone comes to Museo San Francisco for the iconic basilica facade, but they stay for the incredible stories hidden within its ancient walls. Stepping inside feels like a journey through time, from the pre-Columbian artifacts that whisper of civilizations long past to the poignant colonial-era art. I was completely captivated by the quiet, cloistered courtyards and the surprisingly vast catacombs you can explore beneath the church. Itβs so much more than a museum; it's a living, breathing piece of La Paz's soul.
Collection Highlights
The collection of religious art and silverwork is stunning, but don't miss the chance to see the intricate miter of Saint Francis Xavier. For me, the most powerful exhibits were the pre-Columbian textiles and ceramics that tell a much older story of this land.
Visitor Information
It's right in the heart of the city, impossible to miss. Definitely pay the small extra fee for access to the rooftopβthe panoramic views over La Paz's sprawling bowl are absolutely worth every Boliviano.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque and Mestizo architecture, with that famous stone facade carved with native Andean motifs like pineapples and birds intertwined with classic Catholic figures.
