Museo Oro del Perú y Armas del Mundo
About This Museum
Tucked away in the Surco district, this museum has a slightly peculiar but fascinating origin story. It was largely born from the private collection of Miguel Mujica Gallo, who had a passion for both pre-Columbian history and military arms. You'll find yourself wandering from rooms filled with the gleaming gold of ancient Peruvian lords straight into halls showcasing European knights in full armor. It's an eclectic mix that somehow works, creating a journey through both local heritage and global martial history.
Collection Highlights
The star attractions are undoubtedly the dazzling pre-Columbian gold pieces, including ornate funeral masks and intricate ceremonial vessels that speak to incredible craftsmanship. Then you turn a corner and are faced with an extensive array of weapons from across the globe—Samurai swords, conquistador helmets, and medieval crossbows all have their place. Don't miss the vibrant textiles; some of these ancient fabrics retain their colors so brilliantly they feel modern.
Visitor Information
It's located on Alonso de Molina in Surco, which is generally quieter than downtown Lima. Give yourself a good two hours to properly take in both collections without rushing. The lighting is often kept low to protect the artifacts, which adds to the intimate, almost treasure-hunt-like atmosphere.
Architecture & Building
From the outside, it's a fairly unassuming modern building that gives little hint of the treasures within.
