Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes
About This Museum
You'd never guess that one of the largest canvas paintings in Latin America is hiding inside this unassuming building in Havana. Stepping inside is a shock—the main hall soars with a breathtaking, ornate dome that feels more like a cathedral than a museum. I spent hours getting lost across its multiple floors, moving from dark, moody Spanish portraits to rooms exploding with the vibrant, tropical colors of modern Cuban masters. The sheer scale of the place is both impressive and wonderfully overwhelming.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the massive 'The Arrival of the Spanish Navigators' by Armando Menocal, which dominates an entire wall. The collection brilliantly contrasts European old masters with powerful works by Cuban artists like Wifredo Lam and René Portocarrero, whose pieces pulse with the island's unique energy.
Visitor Information
It's located right on the edge of Old Havana, super easy to find. Entry is a steal at a couple of dollars, but double-check their opening times as they can vary.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a beautiful, colonnaded neoclassical building that was once the city's main marketplace; the interior is a stunning surprise of soaring ceilings and a magnificent central dome.
