About This Museum
You know how some museums feel a bit stuffy? This one is the complete opposite. Housed in the old Ensenada jail, it's a place that's absolutely brimming with local character. I spent most of my time completely captivated by the exhibits on the indigenous Kumeyaay people and their incredible resilience. The whole place has this wonderfully relaxed, almost homespun feel, like you're being shown around by a proud local historian rather than just reading plaques on a wall.
Collection Highlights
The life-sized replica of an indigenous Kumeyaay hut was a real standout, giving you a tangible sense of their daily life. I also loved the detailed dioramas showing what the old ranches and vineyards of the region looked like, plus there's a fascinating collection of historical photographs that really tell the story of Ensenada's growth.
Visitor Information
It's right there on Gastélum Avenue in the heart of the Centro histórico, super easy to find. Honestly, you can do it justice in about an hour, which makes for a perfect little cultural break before you head off to grab some fish tacos.

The building itself is the star—it's this beautiful, heavy-set former municipal jail built from stark white stone, giving it a real fortress-like charm that totally sets the tone.
