Museo GranUM - Museo del Granito

★★★★★ 4.5/5 (527 reviews) Excellent

About This Museum

Believe it or not, the very stone used to build Milan's iconic cathedral, the Duomo, was quarried right here in Baveno. Museo GranUM celebrates this incredible legacy, telling the story of granite from the mountain to the monument. You'll find it tucked away in a beautifully repurposed historic building just off the main piazza. It’s a surprisingly engaging journey into the rock that shaped this region and some of Italy's most famous landmarks.

Collection Highlights

The star of the show is a magnificent scale model of the Milan Duomo, but don't miss the collection of vintage quarrying tools—massive saws and drills that feel more like industrial sculptures. Upstairs, you can even trace your fingers over polished slabs showcasing the unique pink hue of Baveno granite.

Visitor Information

It's a small museum, so an hour or two is plenty. The staff are incredibly passionate and often share stories you won't find on any placard. Just look for the stone archway on Piazza della Chiesa; you can't miss it.

Architecture & Building

Housed in a former schoolhouse built from—you guessed it—local granite, its clean lines and sturdy construction are a perfect example of the no-nonsense, elegant style common in this part of Piedmont.
