It’s a museum that defiantly rises from the arid plains of Coahuila, a region more famous for its dust and heat than its world-class treasures. The building itself is a striking interplay of modern angular forms and rustic, earth-toned materials that somehow feel both futuristic and ancient. Inside, you don't just look at exhibits—you walk through a carefully crafted narrative of the desert, from the age of titans to the resilient life that clings on today. It’s an immersive experience that feels less like a curated gallery and more like a journey through deep time.
Collection Highlights
Prepare to be dwarfed by the colossal skeleton of a Coahuilaceratops, a horned dinosaur discovered right here in the state. Beyond the bones, you'll find hauntingly beautiful fossilized fish and the infamous 'Sabinas Plesiosaur.' The adventure continues outside in their live animal zoo, where you can come face-to-snout with native wolves, lumbering tortoises, and an array of creatures that prove the desert is anything but empty.
Visitor Information
Give yourself a good half-day, at least—there's a lot of ground to cover, both indoors and out. It's located just off the main boulevard in Saltillo's new metropolitan center, so it's easy to find. And don't forget your hat and water for the outdoor sections; this is still the desert, after all.
Architecture & Building
The architecture is a bold mix of contemporary concrete and steel, softened by traditional stonework and vast stretches of glass. Its sharp geometric lines are meant to echo the surrounding mountain ranges, creating a powerful silhouette against the big northern Mexican sky.
