About This Museum

Tucked away on a quiet street in Playa del Carmen, Museo Choco-Story is a delightful surprise that connects you directly to the ancient Maya world. Forget dusty artifacts behind glass; this place is an interactive journey where you can actually grind cocoa beans and taste the bitter, frothy drink the Maya considered the 'food of the gods'. The air is thick with the rich, earthy scent of chocolate, making it feel less like a museum and more like a living history lesson. It’s small, personal, and feels a world away from the bustling 5th Avenue just a few blocks over.

Collection Highlights

The highlight for me was watching a traditional chocolate-making demonstration from bean to cup. You also get to wander through a lovely little cacao garden right in the middle of the property, seeing the colorful pods growing on trees. Don't miss the exhibits on Maya cosmology, which beautifully explain cocoa's sacred role in their rituals and trade.

Visitor Information

It's surprisingly affordable and you can easily see everything in about an hour, making it a perfect rainy day or culture-break activity. The staff are incredibly passionate and most tours are bilingual (Spanish and English). Just remember to book ahead online if you want to catch one of their scheduled chocolate-making workshops!

Architecture & Building

The building feels like a large, welcoming family home rather than a formal institution, with high thatched palapa roofs that keep it cool and open-air sections that let the jungle breeze flow through.
