About This Museum

Everyone comes to the Museo Banco de México for the money, but they leave completely enchanted by the building itself. You step off the bustling street of 5 de Mayo and into a breathtaking atrium where a monumental, colorful mural by Montenegro soars overhead. It’s a place that masterfully blends serious economic history with pure aesthetic wonder, making it one of the most unexpectedly beautiful stops in the Centro Histórico. I was utterly captivated by the mix of grand art and fascinating stories tucked inside this former bank vault.

Collection Highlights

The main event is seeing the massive gold bar you're actually allowed to try and lift (good luck!). Don't miss the stunning collection of historic coins and bills that trace Mexico's story, all displayed with incredible clarity. The pièce de résistance is undoubtedly Montenegro's magnificent mural, 'The Integration of Mexico', which dominates the central courtyard.

Visitor Information

It's free to enter, which feels like a steal, and it's right next to the Palacio de Bellas Artes—perfect for a combined cultural outing. Just remember to check their website for opening days as they can be a bit unique.

Architecture & Building

Housed in the original 20th-century Bank of Mexico building, it’s a gorgeous mix of neoclassical grandeur on the outside and a stunning, light-filled modernist atrium on the inside.
