About This Museum
Tucked away on the charming Plaza de la Merced in Cartagena, MURAM is a brilliant little surprise for anyone who thinks they know this historic port city. Housed in a stunningly restored 18th-century palace, it's a place where crisp, contemporary art meets weathered stone walls. I loved how the light poured into the central courtyard, making the modern sculptures feel completely at home. It’s an intimate and thoughtfully curated space that feels more like a hidden gem than a formal institution.
Collection Highlights
The exhibits rotate, but I was captivated by a series of hauntingly beautiful mixed-media paintings from a local Murcian artist. There's also a fascinating permanent collection that explores the development of modern art in Spain from the 20th century onward, with some truly striking abstract pieces.

It's super easy to find right in the city center, and for just a few euros you get access to both the temporary shows and the permanent collection. Check their website for current hours as they can vary by season – we went on a quiet Tuesday afternoon and practically had the place to ourselves.

The museum is set within the beautifully preserved Palacio de Aguirre, a gorgeous example of Cartagena's modernist architecture from the early 1900s, complete with ornate ironwork and a grand, elegant facade.
