Motya Museum
About This Museum
Out here on the salt-pans of the Stagnone Lagoon, the tiny island of Mozia feels a world away from mainland Sicily. The museum itself, founded by the passionate amateur archaeologist Giuseppe 'Pip' Whitaker, tells the story of this ancient Phoenician stronghold. It's not a grand, imposing building, but a place that feels deeply connected to the earth it stands on. Walking through its rooms, you get a real sense of the daily life and far-reaching trade that thrived here over two millennia ago.
Collection Highlights
Without a doubt, the star is the Motya Youth, a stunning Greek marble statue of a young man that was miraculously pulled from the mud in 1979. Alongside this masterpiece, you'll find poignant terracotta burial masks and intricate jewelry that speak to the wealth and artistry of the Phoenician settlers.
