Mestni Stolp in zvonik cerkve sv. Jurija / Ptuj City Tower
About This Museum
Rising from the cobblestones of Ptuj's main square, the City Tower and its companion, the bell tower of St. George's Church, feel like ancient sentinels watching over the town. Climbing the Mestni Stolp rewards you with a breathtaking, panoramic view where the red-tiled roofs of the old town tumble down towards the Drava River. The air up there is different—quiet and breezy, filled with the distant sounds of town life below. It’s a perspective that truly lets you grasp the layers of history you're standing above.
Collection Highlights
The main 'exhibit' here is Ptuj itself, seen from the tower's viewing platform. Inside, you'll find a fascinating exhibition on traditional Ptujska kurenti masks, their carved faces and shaggy costumes telling stories of ancient Slavic rituals meant to chase away winter.
Visitor Information
Wear good shoes for the climb—the wooden staircases are steep but absolutely worth it. For a small fee, you get access to both towers, and I'd recommend going late afternoon when the light turns the entire city golden.
Architecture & Building
The Mestni Stolp is a stout, defensive medieval tower with a distinct baroque-era onion dome cap added later, creating a unique silhouette against the skyline.
