Memorial and Educational Site Andreasstraße
About This Museum
Tucked away on Andreasstraße, this place holds a story that's uniquely Thuringian. It's not just any old building; it was the former Stasi district headquarters and then a detention center for the Ministry for State Security. After the Peaceful Revolution, it became the very first Stasi prison in all of Germany to be opened as a memorial. Today, it stands as a powerful reminder of both political oppression and the courage of those who fought for freedom right here in Erfurt.
Collection Highlights
You can still see the original, chillingly sparse detention cells upstairs, preserved just as they were. Downstairs, the exhibits tell the local stories of how people lived under the GDR dictatorship and how they eventually brought it down. One of its most moving features is the permanent exhibition 'Revolution and Round Table', which focuses on that pivotal year of 1989.
Visitor Information
Come spend an afternoon here; it's a sobering but essential visit. They've got excellent audio guides, and you'll often find locals who lived through it all sharing their own memories during events. It really makes the history feel immediate and personal.
Architecture & Building
It's housed in a rather unassuming, rectangular administrative building from the GDR era, all concrete and functionality. There's no grand facade, which somehow makes the heavy history held within its walls even more potent.
