Melikhovo isn't a grand, imposing estate but something far more intimate: the beloved country home where Anton Chekhov wrote 'The Seagull' and tended his cherry orchard. You get a sense of the man himself here, not just the literary giant, wandering the same paths he once walked. The main house feels frozen in time, preserved with his personal belongings as if he's just stepped out for a walk to the nearby pond. It’s a quiet, deeply personal portal into the writer's world.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the collection is Chekhov's study, complete with his simple wooden desk and the very pen he used to write his masterpieces. Elsewhere, you'll find his iconic pince-nez, medical tools from his practice as a country doctor, and charming family photographs that reveal a lighter side of the writer. Don't miss the small outbuilding he famously had built in just three days to write in peace.
Visitor Information
Come in summer to catch a play at their wonderful open-air theater; there's nothing quite like watching 'Uncle Vanya' performed right where it was conceived. The grounds are lovely for a stroll, especially when the orchards are in bloom. It’s an easy day trip from Moscow, offering a wonderfully peaceful escape from the city bustle.
