La Sebastiana Museo de Pablo Neruda
About This Museum
Perched high on Cerro Bellavista, La Sebastiana was Pablo Neruda's whimsical escape, a house he designed specifically for parties and to watch Valparaíso's magnificent fireworks. Stepping inside feels less like entering a museum and more like stumbling upon the poet's private world, which was abruptly left behind. Every room is an eccentric cabinet of curiosities, filled with his favorite colored glass, vintage maps, and strange nautical collectibles. The real masterpiece, however, is the view from the top-floor living room—a breathtaking panorama of the chaotic, colorful port tumbling down into the Pacific Ocean.
Collection Highlights
His quirky personal bar stocked with unusual bottles, the low-slung living room chair positioned for optimal viewing, and the gilded wooden horse from a carousel that greets you at the entrance.
Visitor Information
Wear good shoes for the walk up the hill! It's a steep but rewarding climb through Valparaíso's famous street art-lined lanes. Inside, the house is a labyrinth of narrow staircases and tight corners, so take your time exploring.
Architecture & Building
A tall, narrow, almost ship-like structure that Neruda helped design, featuring wildly colored walls, uneven floors, and windows deliberately framed to capture specific views of the bay and city below.
