Ku Kaew, Ancient Monument, Ancient Khmer Ruins, Outside Khon Kaen City

★★★★★ 4.6/5 (6,146 reviews) Excellent

About This Museum

Everyone comes to Ku Kaew for a glimpse of ancient Khmer power, and let me tell you, it doesn't disappoint. Tucked away just outside the city, this serene sanctuary feels a world apart from Khon Kaen's modern buzz. You're greeted by the warm, pinkish sandstone of the main prang, a structure that has defiantly stood for nearly a thousand years. It’s a quiet, almost spiritual place where you can truly feel the weight of history without the crowds.

Collection Highlights

The star is the central tower itself, but don't miss the beautifully carved lintels depicting Hindu deities and intricate floral patterns. Scattered around the grounds are ancient boundary stones and the remains of a surrounding moat, which help you imagine the complete 'arokayasala' or ancient hospital complex this once was.

Visitor Information

It's incredibly easy to visit; just a short drive from central Khon Kaen, and there's no entrance fee. The site is compact and mostly uncovered, so go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun.

Architecture & Building

A classic Khmer-style 'prang' or tower sanctuary built from laterite and sandstone, characteristic of the Arokayasala healing stations constructed under King Jayavarman VII.
