About This Museum

For generations, the Royal Museum has been our city's treasure chest of art, a grand old building that has watched over Antwerp since the 19th century. It’s the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon utterly lost, wandering from the quiet glow of a Flemish Primitive to the bold, unsettling stare of a James Ensor mask. After being closed for what felt like an eternity for a massive renovation, it reopened its doors in 2022, brighter and more magnificent than ever. Stepping inside now feels like walking into a conversation between centuries of Flemish masters.

Collection Highlights

You simply must stand before Rubens's monumental 'The Adoration of the Magi' to feel its sheer power, then seek out the quieter, almost magical details in Jan van Eyck's 'Saint Barbara'. Don't rush past the Van Dyck portraits or the fantastical, crowded worlds of Pieter Bruegel the Younger. Up in the modern wings, you'll find yourself face-to-face with Rik Wouters' vibrant 'The Mad Virgin' and an entire room pulsating with James Ensor's peculiar genius.

Visitor Information

You'll find it right on Leopold de Waelplaats; it's hard to miss that grand temple-like facade. Booking your ticket online ahead of your visit is a good idea to skip any queues. They're open Tuesday through Sunday, but do check their website for the latest times as they can change with the seasons.

Architecture & Building

It’s a magnificent example of neoclassical architecture—all soaring columns and imposing symmetry on the outside. But the real surprise is inside: after the renovation, you discover these breathtaking, stark white modern galleries hidden within the original historic structure, creating this wonderful dialogue between old and new.
