Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi
About This Museum
People come from all over the world, not for a grand building, but for a single, ancient tree. They come to see the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree grown from a cutting of the very one the Buddha found enlightenment under. It's more than just a tree; it's a living chronicle, its sprawling branches supported by golden crutches and surrounded by the murmured prayers of pilgrims. The air here feels different—thick with devotion and centuries of hope.
Collection Highlights
The main 'exhibit' is the ancient tree itself, enshrined on a high terrace. Surrounding it are golden railings, countless prayer flags, and smaller shrines where devotees leave offerings of lotus flowers and oil lamps.
Visitor Information
You'll need to remove your shoes before walking up to the terraces, so be prepared for hot stone in the midday sun. It's best to visit in the cool of the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and the atmosphere is at its most serene.
Architecture & Building
It’s less about a single building and more about a sacred landscape; you'll find tiered white terraces (called 'Uda Maluwa' and 'Pahala Maluwa'), intricately carved golden fences, and various smaller image houses clustered around the central tree.
