International Emerald Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away on the 23rd floor of the iconic Avianca Building in downtown Bogotá, this little museum is a true hidden gem—literally. It feels like a secret club for emerald enthusiasts, high above the city's hustle. You won't find a stuffy, old-fashioned hall here; instead, you get an intimate look at Colombia's most famous stone straight from the source. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the journey these rough, green crystals take from deep in the earth to the world stage.
Collection Highlights
The real stars are the raw, uncut emeralds still embedded in their host rock—you can see them exactly as they're pulled from the mines in Boyacá. They also have displays that tell the story of Muzo and its legendary mines, tracing how these stones have been treasured since pre-Columbian times.
Visitor Information
Just head to the Avianca Building on Calle 16 and take the elevator up. It's a good idea to call ahead as their hours can be flexible. The view from up there alone is worth the trip.
Architecture & Building
The museum is housed in the Edificio Avianca, a classic 1970s Bogotá skyscraper that was once the tallest in the country, representing that era's modernist ambition.
