The Fossil Community Museum
About This Museum
People make the pilgrimage to Villa de Leyva for one magnificent reason: to stand in the presence of a true prehistoric leviathan. The entire museum is built around 'El Fósil', the near-complete skeleton of a Kronosaurus that stretches an astonishing 8 meters across the floor, a marine reptile that ruled the ancient sea that once covered this very spot. You can walk right up to its terrifyingly large skull and jagged teeth, getting a palpable sense of the power it wielded during the Cretaceous period. It’s a humbling and utterly unforgettable encounter with deep time.
Collection Highlights
The star is undoubtedly the colossal Kronosaurus, but don't miss the fascinating fossils of a Cretaceous crocodile relative found nearby, which help paint a fuller picture of this ancient ecosystem.
