About This Museum

People come here to understand a truly unique chapter in history, when Gdańsk wasn't quite Poland and wasn't quite Germany, but was its own independent city-state. You get completely immersed in the era, walking past recreated shop windows and seeing the actual passports and stamps used by its citizens. It’s a compact space, but it packs a real punch, making this complex political situation feel incredibly human and personal. I left feeling like I finally grasped a piece of European history I never really understood before.

Collection Highlights

The replica of a 1930s street with period shop fronts is fantastic, but the most gripping items are the personal documents—the Free City passports and currency that made this place real for its people.
