Het Nederlands Vestingmuseum
About This Museum
Tucked away in the star-shaped fortress of Naarden, the Vestingmuseum is a place that truly breathes history. It's not just a building; it's the fortress itself, with its massive earthworks and hidden casemates, that forms the main exhibit. Here, you can walk the very ramparts that once defended the Dutch Republic. Itβs a tangible link to a time when water was both a threat and a saviour for our nation.
Collection Highlights
You'll find more than just old cannons, though we have plenty of those. The real thrill is descending into the cool, brick-vaulted casemates where soldiers once lived and stored their gunpowder. One room recreates a 19th-century soldier's quarters down to the last detail, while another holds an impressive collection of historic firearms and uniforms that tell personal stories of garrison life.
Visitor Information
Don't miss the cannon firing demonstration on Sundaysβthe boom echoes right through you! Afterwards, climb up to the bastion for a stunning view over the town's unique star-shaped canals; itβs the perfect way to grasp the sheer ingenuity of our old defences.
Architecture & Building
The museum is housed within Naarden-Vesting itself, a masterpiece of 17th-century military engineering. You're exploring authentic, low-slung brick barracks and cavernous gunpowder storage rooms built right into the grassy ramparts.
