Gold Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away in the heart of La Candelaria, the Gold Museum isn't just a building; it's a journey into the very soul of ancient Colombia. It all started back in 1939 when the Bank of the Republic began safeguarding these national treasures, officially opening its doors to the public in 1968. The real magic happens downstairs in the dimly lit treasury, where you come face-to-face with the legendary Muisca Raft—that intricate golden figure that whispers the enduring legend of El Dorado. Afterward, you can pop up to the cafe for a coffee and try to process it all.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is undoubtedly the Muisca Raft, a stunning pre-Columbian gold piece depicting the ceremony of a new chief, which inspired the El Dorado myth. But don't rush past the cases filled with delicate poporo quimbaya vessels, used for lime in coca rituals, or the mesmerizing tunjos—small gold votive offerings left as prayers in sacred lakes.
Visitor Information
It's right on Parque Santander, easy to spot. Do yourself a favor and take it slow; this place is a lot to take in. The quiet hum and low lighting in the main exhibit halls make you feel like you've discovered a secret tomb.
Architecture & Building
From the outside, it's this imposing, angular modern block of concrete and glass that somehow fits right in with Bogotá's colonial architecture. But they cleverly saved all the wonder for inside.
