Etnograficheskiy Muzey Pod Otkrytym Nebom Im. V.i. Romanova
About This Museum
Tucked away in the charming city of Koz'modem'yansk, within the Mari El Republic, this open-air museum is a sprawling village dedicated to the region's rural heritage. Instead of static displays, you'll wander along paths connecting authentic wooden houses, windmills, and churches that were relocated from across the republic. It feels less like a museum and more like stepping back in time to a working Volga village. The sheer scale and peaceful setting make it a perfect place to spend an afternoon exploring at your own pace.
Collection Highlights
Keep an eye out for the towering black wooden windmill, a real landmark on the grounds. Inside the various izbas (log houses), you'll find traditional looms, beautifully painted furniture, and rustic household items that show how people lived and worked.
Visitor Information
You'll find it at Promyshlennaya St, 24. Since it's entirely outdoors, check the weather and wear comfortable shoes for walking the extensive grounds.
Architecture & Building
The site is a collection of historic wooden structures showcasing traditional Volga region architecture, characterized by intricate carved window frames and steeply pitched roofs on the log-built homes and chapels.
