Cross cave
About This Museum
I thought I knew what a cave was, but the Cross Cave completely rewrote the definition. This isn't just a walk through damp tunnels; it's a journey into a silent, subterranean world of immense, echoing chambers and crystal-clear lakes that glow an impossible shade of turquoise. You'll actually board a small, quiet boat, gliding across one of its more than twenty underground lakes, the only sound being the drip of water creating stalactites over millennia. The air is cool and still, and as your guide's light dances across formations that look like frozen waterfalls and alien corals, you feel a million miles from the world above.
Collection Highlights
The real stars here are nature's sculptures: the brilliant white 'Singing Stone' formation and the massive 'Concert Hall' chamber are breathtaking. Don't miss the unique olm, a pale, blind salamander that calls these dark waters home—it's a living fossil you won't see just anywhere.
Visitor Information
Book your tour in advance, especially in summer, as they're the only way to see it. It's a constant 8°C (46°F) down there year-round, so bring a warm layer even if it's sweltering outside.
Architecture & Building
Forget a building—the architecture here is all natural. You enter through a modest opening in the hillside into a vast karst labyrinth of limestone halls, sculpted entirely by water over millions of years.
