Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art
About This Museum
I stumbled upon this absolute gem of a museum tucked right in the heart of Santiago's old town. It's entirely dedicated to the incredible artistic achievements of the Americas long before Columbus ever set sail. You walk through rooms filled with everything from intricate Moche pottery depicting daily life to breathtakingly preserved Andean textiles that feel impossibly modern. The whole place has this quiet, almost reverent atmosphere that makes you slow down and really appreciate the craftsmanship.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the 'Chinchorro mummies', which are even older than their Egyptian counterparts, and the stunning Mapuche silverwork that just glitters under the lights. The collection of Maya carved jade and wild-looking Aztec stone sculptures are also total standouts.
Visitor Information
It's super easy to find at Bandera 361, right near the Plaza de Armas. Definitely pop into their shop on the way out – it has some really beautiful and tasteful replicas, not your usual tourist trinkets.
Architecture & Building
The museum itself is a beautiful piece of history, housed in a grand Neoclassical building from the early 1800s that was once part of Santiago's old colonial Royal Customs House.
