About This Museum

Tucked away just a stone's throw from the National Museum in San José, Chietón Morén is a true hidden gem. The name itself, meaning 'Our Roots' in the Boruca language, perfectly captures its mission to celebrate Costa Rica's living indigenous heritage. It feels less like a formal institution and more like stepping into a vibrant, curated collection of stories told through incredible craftsmanship. You'll find everything from the powerful, hand-carved Bribri masks used in sacred ceremonies to the intricate Ngäbe baskets, each strand woven with history.

Collection Highlights

The centerpiece for me was the stunning collection of traditional Boruca devil masks, each one a riot of color and symbolism carved from local balsa wood. Don't miss the delicate, impossibly fine chocolate-colored pottery from the Guaitil tradition, a technique passed down since pre-Columbian times. It’s all so alive because many pieces are made by contemporary artisans you can meet right in the connected mercadito.

Visitor Information

It's incredibly easy to find—just 25 meters south of the National Museum's southeast corner. The best part? After you've soaked in the culture, you can pop into their little mercadito and take home a beautiful, ethically-sourced piece of craftsmanship directly from the artists.

Architecture & Building

Housed in an unassuming building typical of downtown San José, with warm terracotta tiles and airy rooms that let the artwork truly shine without any pretension.
