About This Museum
You can't miss the old Bellavista Fortress, a striking white building perched on a hill in the heart of San José. It transitioned from a military barracks to the National Museum back in 1950, and they've done a wonderful job of preserving its layered history—you can still see bullet holes pockmarking the outer walls from the 1948 civil war. Stepping inside feels like walking through a condensed version of Costa Rica's entire story, from pre-Columbian civilizations to its modern commitment to peace and ecology. The air is cool and quiet, with sunlight streaming into courtyards that seamlessly blend the old architecture with lush, tropical gardens.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the mesmerizing Room of Pre-Columbian History, filled with intricate stone spheres and gold artifacts that hint at ancient mysteries. Upstairs, you'll find beautifully curated exhibits on natural history, including a stunning butterfly garden and a complete sperm whale skeleton. The preserved historic house gives you a tangible feel for 19th-century life.
Visitor Information
It's centrally located on Avenida Central, so it's an easy walk from many downtown spots. I'd recommend setting aside at least two hours to really soak it all in without feeling rushed.
