Chamkhar Town
About This Museum
You'll find the Chamkhar Town museum tucked away just off the Bumthang Highway in Jakar, more a living part of the town than a separate institution. It grew organically from the old market itself, a place where locals decided the stories of their everyday tools and trade were worth preserving. Stepping inside feels less like entering a formal gallery and more like wandering into your grandparents' attic, if your grandparents were master weavers and farmers. The air is cool and carries the faint, comforting scent of aged wood and old paper.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the stunning handwoven textiles, each pattern telling a specific family or village story, displayed next to the simple, sturdy wooden looms that created them. You can also see a fascinating collection of traditional agricultural tools—heavy iron plows and beautifully worn butter churns—that shaped life in this valley for generations.
Visitor Information
It's right there in the heart of things, so just look for it near the main market area; the hours can be flexible, so it's always best to ask a local shopkeeper if the door is open.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a classic Bhutanese stone-and-timber building with a sloping roof, it blends so seamlessly with its neighbors you might almost walk past it.
