Jambay Lhakhang བྱམས་་པ་ལྷ་ཁང་།
About This Museum
People come to Jambay Lhakhang not just to see an ancient temple, but to stand on a place of legend, one of 108 built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century to pin down a colossal demoness. Stepping inside feels like walking into a living chronicle, where the air is thick with the scent of old wood and butter lamps. The main statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha, is breathtaking in its serene presence. You leave feeling you've touched something truly ancient and powerful.
Collection Highlights
The centerpiece is the magnificent statue of Jowo Jamba (Maitreya), but don't miss the stunning collection of ancient chainmail armor worn by past guardians and the vibrant, detailed murals that seem to whisper stories from the walls.
Visitor Information
It's located just outside Jakar in Bumthang, a beautiful valley that's often called the cultural heart of Bhutan. Try to time your visit with one of its festivals if you can; the Jambay Lhakhang Drup, with its famous naked fire dance, is an experience you'll never forget.
Architecture & Building
You can see its incredible age in the massive, white-washed walls and the classic, sloping roof—a timeless example of early Himalayan temple design that has stood firm for over a millennium.
